Well its been a busy few months for me so far. I haven’t been posting but that doesn’t mean things aren’t happening. I know I still owe you all photos from my vacay in Seattle and Oregon. Plus I just got back from my best friends wedding in TN. But to let you all know that I’m still alive let me tell you about Yahoo! Weather.

I got an email from Project Weather on Flickr the other day, requesting me to add a photo to their pool. I of course added it and then looked into the group. The pool exists for their weather app. It takes pictures from the group and displays the location and weather conditions at the time. For example, if I was in DC during the day, and it was cloudy, there is a good chance you’d see the above photo. Further more, they link the photo to your Flickr page. So I encourage everyone to download this app and look for my pics when you’re in locations like Reading, PA, DC, Gainesboro and Gatlinburg, TN, Crystal River and Cedar Key, FL, Niagara Falls, Vegas, Paris, Sydney, New Zealand. To help you out the photos below are what are on there right now.

Band Practice

I would like to send a shout out to my brother-in-law Cameron Novack (a.k.a. Novackaine). I thought he did a great job on The Voice tonight. He deserved to be picked but unfortunately the judges did not choose him. While I wish he would have made it, he still has all his awesome talent and an amazing band For The Colony to go back to. Hang in there bro, I have a feeling that this is going to open way more doors than it closed. Enjoy the photos of Cameron and For The Colony.

When Day and Night Collide

I am still alive and taking photos! I know it’s been a while since my last post and I still own you all the images from our vacation in Seattle and Astoria. That will have to wait for another post I’m afraid. I have not been posting due to the fact that I’ve been down in FL for work, yet again.

While I haven’t been getting out that much, I have still found time to take a few photos with my new 5D mark II. I made it to CES and found a dark(-ish) park in Fl. While nothing amazing, its still great practice and I love the new camera. Here are some of the photos. Hopefully I only have one more month down here then I can get back to normal shooting again.

Whoopie Pie Festival
Another weekend, another challenge. Today was the 7th annual Whoopie Pie Festival in Lancaster County, PA. Apparently there is a feud between Pennsylvania and Maine as to whom really owns the whoopie pie. From what I’ve gathered, PA had it first and Maine was trying to claim it as their own by making the World’s Largest Whoopie Pie. But of course with today’s festival, PA is trying to get the record back. Before I pass judgement on either, I need to try out the Maine Whoopie Pie festival. Anyways, the real challenge today (besides the whoopie pie eating contest which I lost) was trying to get photos of a small crowded event while saving my camera form getting wet. As soon as we got there it started sprinkling. I ended up putting the weather bag on my thinktank bag. I had the camera on the R-Strap and tucked under the bag as I was walking. The entire time I kept thinking that I could use one of those covers that attaches to the front of your lens. I think I managed to keep everything drive enough and catch some decent shots. Check them out below.

Band Practice
One of my co-works is in a band and asked if I could photograph them. I had it in my mind a regular concert with lights and a stage. Instead it was a bar that was not set up to have a band at all. No stage, they had to move tables to put the band against the very cluttered wall. No lights, it was a bar. And not a lot of fans, which made it awkward to be the only on in a bar with a camera, snapping photos of a band that no one is really watching. To make matters even worse, I did not have my telephoto lens yet, plus I got there early to eat and ended up getting a little buzzed. Here are the only savable shots from the Jeepster gig.

I was very discouraged after this shoot. I started thinking that band photography was really hard. But then, while I was in St. Louis, my brother-in-law had a band and they had a practice space at the old Lemp Brewery. This place was FANTASTIC! The space was huge and has such a rich history that I would of been happy to just take photos of just the building. Plus I also got a telephoto lens, though, since it was practice (no fans) and I could get a lot closer than normal, I didn’t really need it. They also had lights! I was getting great photos of them before they turned all the lights on, but when they flicked the switch everything started having a more dramatic feel. I was having the time of my life just snapping away. I now know the appeal of concert photography. So, with a new lens, a practice space with an uncluttered background, and lights, this was the result. Enjoy For The Colony. P.S. for more of these photos please visit either my flickr or facebook page.

Finally another one of my co-workers is in another band. (Who knew nuke power engineer liked being in bands…) He saw me show the above photos to Seng1011 for our portfolio, and asked if we could take photos of his band. They were playing the Fair and had lights, a stage, and everything. The set up was ok, the biggest two problems were the direction they were facing, (west into the setting sun, shadows from the lights were landing on them strangely), and they had a dance floor right in front of the stage that no one was dancing on. Besides that everything was great. Here are the 600 people that make up Mitch and the Mood Swings.

Starry Night

So I finally talked my wife Leah Tyler and co-worker Seng1011 into going to a dark in northern PA. The park is Cherry Springs State Park in Potter county PA. Amateur astronomers are the usual crowd, but I thought a couple of photographers wouldn’t take up to much room. I’ve always wanted to take night sky photos and saw that there was a new moon coming up on a weekend. So I got Leah and Seng to make the four hour trip up there to test our skills, the entire drive we tried to come up with a company name. Not sure we really got anything settled but it was definite some hilarious comments.

The entire week before I was looking up how to’s for Milky Way and star trails. We got there in the daylight which gave us plenty of time to set up our cameras and observe everyone’s big shiny telescopes. After the cameras were set up we just waited. It got dark, except for the light from the stars, and we began taking photos. Seng had the noise cancellation setting turned on, but I was to concerned with battery life so I did not have it on. His photos took twice as long to take but he did not have the noise issues I ran into with the half hour shots. He also had a bigger sensor on his camera that allowed him to take 30 second shots instead of the 60 second ones I was taking. This allowed for less overall movement of his photos, where I was right at the limit of starting to have star trails. Another big factor is framing. It’s almost impossible to see anything through your view finder, you just end up with point and pray. Over all it was a great experience, even though I drove a total of 8 hours and did not sleep. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I did taking them.

Gilmore Henne 2011 Rally for RecreationComedy Showcase and Benefit

So a few weeks ago a Seng1011 and I ran into a co-worker that said he has some friends that might be looking for some photographers for their company.  He then introduced us to the nice guys at DYNAMIC who were getting ready for a big event.  After impressing them with our portfolios, they said they could use us for this big charity event happening in a week.  So we then started doing our homework on the event.  It turns out to be the Gilmore|Henne Community Fund Rally for Recreation Comedy Showcase and Benefit.  John Gilmore and Chad Henne started this fund to help raise money to rebuild and restore some local community parks in the Reading Pennsylvania area, giving children modern, safe, and clean areas to play.

This event was huge!  Seng1011 and myself spent eight hours photographing all three floors, theater, dance floors, casino tables, bands, comedians, auctions, and in general everything.  It was the most fun I’ve had behind the camera.  At the end of it all we had 6000 photos to sort through and edit.  Below is a taste of the event overall.  For more photos please visit either my Flickr or Facebook page or Seng1011‘s Flickr or Facebook page.  Please let me know what you think.  And Please support Gilmore|Henne and DYNAMIC on Facebook.

So Steve bought Lightroom 3 and has been making crazy good photos with it. In order to keep up and make whatever future business we have easier, I just downloaded a trail version today. I have to say I’m very impressed with what it can do. It does take a little getting use to. Once I get everything figured out I know this will speed up workflow. This is the first photo that I retouched and I’m blown away by the results. I cropped it down, took the color out, and put a slight vignette on while messing with a few tones. I was intimidated by the process of editing before but I found lightroom to be easy to play with until I got the look I wanted.

Since editing will get better we are going to explore the other aspects of lightroom, those being the making templates for websites. We are slowly but surely growing our ways and means to break into business.

Heavenly, originally uploaded by spaceyjessie.

Ah a new year. I really have forgotten about this blog for a few months now. In my defense, I have been very busy going to two wedding, a funeral, and a honeymoon.

The funeral was for my uncle down in Fl. I flew down to Tn, picked up my mom and drove the rest of the way. It was good to see the family but the circumstances sucked. So after the funeral I drove my mom back, then headed over to east Tn for my cousin’s wedding.

She had a very beautiful wedding. The place was in the middle of nowhere and set up perfectly. I got there and immediately started playing photographer. I started taking over all photos of the reception area which was a combination of a tent outside and rustic looking cabin. I still need to stitch/edit some of those. I finally find my cousin, the bride to be. She, of course, is doing the most hilarious thing. She wants a glass of wine before she says her vows. The only problem is, she doesn’t have a corkscrew. I walk in on her stabbing the cork with a butter knife. This of course is not working. Finally her dad shows up with a drill and wine is served, though with some bits of cork. The rest of the evening goes relatively smooth. The bridesmaids get the groomsmen for a few pictures of flower pinning. The coordinator asks me if we are done taking photos cause the ceremony needs to start. Since I’m not the photographer, I’m only playing so, I direct her to the real photographers (more on them later). At this point, one of my other cousins (a bridesmaid) realizes that she forgot the rings and makes a mad dash to get them. I follow to get the bouquets that everyone forgot. On my way I see the bride in a white horse drawn carriage. My jaw kind of drops because I was not expecting that. It really was a very beautiful wedding. We get everything and make it to the ceremony site. I take my seat and watch the ceremony. I hang out at the reception and try to snap some photos but it was getting dark. I end up talking to the wedding photographers. Very nice people. They started small and grew from there. A bunch of family and friends wanted them to take senior photos and weddings naturally came to them. Since I am trying to build a website with Steve, Seng1011, I ask about their website. They have flickr but don’t really use it anymore, then they built their own site and use facebook to show off their stuff. Both can be located here: http://rbbphotography.com/ and http://www.facebook.com/#!/rbbphoto?v=wall. If you live in the Knoxville area and need a photographer, you should check them out. As for my photos from the wedding, I would post some here but I am just now getting around to editing them. I think they deserve a later post over editing and lightroom.

After her wedding, I drive home to Pa and work for a week. I then drive back to Tn for a week off before my wedding in St. Louis. While my wedding was about as different as my cousins’, it was still very beautiful. It was on the day before Halloween so we had black and purple everywhere. We had classy masks and candy for favors. For everyone that I’ve talked to that attended have said it was great. However, the people working to make it great, know better. Just about nothing went right. We get there for rehearsal to discover that the sun is coming in at that time and would blind everyone. The place said they would take care of it but of course they did not. We had to call an outside vendor to come in last minute. The dj company we had kind of fell apart right before our wedding. They sent some rookie that messed up just about everything. There of course was other stuff but it is not really important. We got married. Was it worth all the headache and money? No. I’m telling everyone right now, Elope! I wanted a nice wedding as much as anyone else but it really isn’t worth the hassle of all the incompetent vendors and the complete ripoffs that are/is the wedding industry. Elope and save the money for your honeymoon.

Speaking of honeymoons, ours was amazing! The honeymoon was worth the headache of throwing a wedding. We went to Sydney for a week, followed by New Zealand for two. The weather in Sydney sucked for us. It was cold and rainy and we were sick from the plane. Other than that, Sydney was wonderful. The food was AMAZING. I’m not a big food person and I loved everywhere we ate. We did a little bit of everything while there. We surfed, went to an opera, went to the blue mountains, petted some koalas, and went on a ghost tour. I will definitely go back there some day. Then we went to New Zealand. That is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been to. If you ever get a chance, visit New Zealand. We started on the south island where we went whale watching, swam with dolphins, went horse back riding, ballooning, and went to Milford Sound. Milford Sound is amazing. I would describe it but my words would fail to convey how magnificent that place is. As far as showing you a picture of it, I have not made my way to editing or loading to the web any of them yet. The HDR for this blog is of a church on Lake Tekapo. The blues of the lake are very stunning. It truly is unlike anything i’ve ever seen before. From there we went to the north island where we saw some geothermal sites and went to hobbiton. I’m not really a Lord of the Rings geek, but since we were there….

Anyways, that is why I have not posted anything in a while. October was filled with wedding stuff. November was honeymoon stuff. What about December? Well that’s for Christmas and sorting through the thousands of photos I have from the past few months. So to make up from the lack of content the past few months I figured a long post was needed and deserved.

Art Museum Statue, originally uploaded by spaceyjessie.

Ah, another Friday with time for another update. This statue is in front of the Philly art museum. I took this while running around the city with my friend Steve that I mentioned before. It was my birthday and I had the day off. Unfortunately, my girlfriend had to work that day so Steven and I headed to Philly for a day of photography. Very fun, got to learn about Philly, take some great shots, and try my had at some more HDRs.

The reason I posted this picture is because Steve, Leah (the girlfriend/ fiance), and myself are going to back to this spot tomorrow morning. Leah and myself will be playing models while Steve plays photographer for some engagement type photos. He has an entire list of things he wants to shoot. The bad news is the fact that we want some sunrise shots and have to get up around 4 am. But it should be worth it. We should get some great shots that we can use at the wedding and get more practice at that kind of photography. I will keep this updated on what happens.
